Woman Crush Of The Month : Raya Martigny

This article was written by Jen Cassamajor.
This month’s crush will please all our fashion lovers out there. As much as we love to talk about inspiring women speaking up about social and environmental issues, we think we can find role models in any field, including that particular one we’re so fond of: fashion. Today we’re introducing one of the models you should definitely keep an eye on as she has basically stolen the spotlight in the last fashion weeks. Ladies and gentlemen, Raya Martigny.
Meet Raya Martigny

Her name might not ring a bell but you’ve probably already seen her face somewhere as it is quite simple: lately Raya Martigny has been EVE-RY-WHERE. Model, artist and actress, Raya has that kind of magnetic face you can’t ever truly forget and the biggest fashion houses seem to have noticed it. Viktor&Rolf, Margiela, Jean-Paul Gaultier, they’ve all made Raya Martigny’s impressive figure - height: 189cm, shoe size: 43 - a part of one of their shows. More recently, the French model - who left Réunion island to pursue her career - has even become one of Mugler’s égérie and one of the faces of the brand’s last campaign for their iconic perfume, Angel. One of her biggest fashion moments? Mugler’s 2023 Spring-Summer show. An historical moment as the brand was making its return on a catwalk after a 3-year gap.

Why do we love seeing her shine in the fashion industry?

As a trans and colored woman, it is not about making Raya Martigny the spokesperson for an entire generation but acknowledging that her visibility can have a lot of positive impact. Her story - which seems to only be starting - is building a path for others to follow or be inspired by as her already impressive career can help others feeling represented. And that feeling of representation should not be underestimated in an industry that still has a lot to learn. A new generation of models is currently reminding us of the fact that fashion can be more than pretty clothes and sparkles, it can also be a way for people to get to the center of the stage and express themselves. We’ve already mentioned several times how much the fashion industry should hold itself accountable when it comes to climate change but that does apply to other social and ethical issues. In the meantime, we will keep looking up to all those impressive and inspiring women such as Raya Martigny and we definitely won’t be the only ones!
