In so many situations, information is key and climate change is definitely one of them. We firmly believe that learning can be the start of many actions when it comes to environmental issues. Lucky us, we live in an era where information is everywhere : documentaries, podcasts, Instagram accounts… But we have to admit it, sometimes we like to go back to a more old school tool : books. We’ve compiled our favorite books to learn more about the environment and climate change.
The Uninhabitable Earth by David Wallace-Wells (2019)
In The Uninhabitable Earth, David Wallace-Wells leaves us no choice but to face the reality of global warming. The columnist and editor makes it clear that it is an urgent matter we can’t ignore any longer. While reading this book might make you feel a little anxious, it will also give you a great reminder of what exactly is the key against climate-change : us. By conveying a feeling of urgency, the author helps us realizing it is now or never to avoid more major negative effects. While it doesn’t offer concrete solutions, this book might be the little push you needed to take action.
All We Can Save: Truth, Courage, and Solutions for the Climate Crisis by Ayana Elizabeth Jonhson and Katharine K. Wilkinson (2020)
This is probably one of our favorite books ever as it is the perfect combo of two topics very close to our hearts : the environment (obviously) and women. All We Can Save is a collection of essays and poems written by 60 women climate activists compiled by Ayana Elizabeth Johnson, a marine biologist and Katharine K. Wilson, a climate expert. This one is a great book to start a journey to a better understanding of the climate crisis as you can pick it up and read a few pages here and there. It is also a great way to discover inspiring women working actively to save our planet.
This Changes Everything : Capitalism VS The Climate by Naomi Klein (2014)
Even though it was released in 2014, we still recommend this one. The journalist Naomi Klein reveals through an incredible work how capitalism and its main actors play a major part in climate change denial. When thinking about climate related issues, we tend to put the blame on individuals while so much can be done by governments and societies. This thorough work makes us look at the debate from another perspective but also shows us that solutions actually exist if only we accept to change the way we function as societies.
What Can I Do?: The Truth About Climate Change and How to Fix It by Jane Fonda (2020)
You probably didn’t expect to come across Jane Fonda’s name in today’s post. Well, believe it or not, this is probably the most relatable book of that selection. The legendary actress tells us about her personal relation to the climate crisis, from an overwhelming feeling of despair to an urge to fight. Isn’t that what we all go through? Wherever you are on that journey, we hope you’ll enjoy this book as much as we did as it gives concrete information on major subjects such as the preservation of the oceans or how to promote environmental justice.
Journal de guerre écologique by Hugo Clément (2020)
Last but not least, a French book! Through the years, the journalist Hugo Clément has become one of the faces of environmental activism in France. When he’s not speaking up in the French media or on his social media, he’s doing it in books. In Journal de guerre écologique, the author meets people wanting to act for the protection of the planet, showing us that it is still possible to act but also that the only way to do it well is to act together as a whole.
